The Best Low-Tech Plants for Tanks Without CO₂

The Best Low-Tech Plants for Tanks Without CO₂

Not every aquarium needs pressurized CO₂ to look lush and green. In fact, many plants thrive in low-tech tanks with just decent lighting, a good substrate, and a little patience. If you’re just starting out or simply want a tank that’s easy to maintain, these plants will give you beautiful growth without the hassle of CO₂ injection.

1. Java Fern

Java Fern is a true classic. It grows slowly, doesn’t need to be buried in the substrate, and thrives when attached to driftwood or rocks. Its sturdy leaves make it perfect for community tanks with shrimp or peaceful fish.

💡 Tip: Don’t bury the rhizome (the thick base). Instead, tie or glue it to hardscape, and let it spread naturally.

2. Anubias

Like Java Fern, Anubias is an epiphyte plant that prefers to grow attached to wood or stone. Its broad, dark green leaves make it a striking centerpiece. It’s almost indestructible and can handle lower light tanks without issue.

💡 Tip: Slow grower, so keep it free of algae by placing it in shaded spots or alongside faster-growing plants.

3. Cryptocoryne (Crypts)

Crypts come in many shapes and colors, from the wavy Crypt Wendtii to the striking red varieties. They root deeply in the substrate and spread slowly, forming lush clusters over time.

💡 Tip: Crypts may “melt” (lose leaves) when first introduced, but don’t panic. Keep the roots in place and new leaves will grow back stronger.

4. Amazon Sword

If you want a bold, leafy background plant, Amazon Swords are hard to beat. These plants thrive in low-tech tanks but do best with a nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs since they’re heavy root feeders.

💡 Tip: One sword plant can grow very large — plan your aquascape so it doesn’t take over the tank.

5. Java Moss

Perfect for shrimp tanks and breeding setups, Java Moss attaches to driftwood, rocks, or even spreads along the substrate. It grows easily in low light and provides a natural, wild look while also serving as shelter for small fish and shrimp.

💡 Tip: Trim it regularly to prevent it from becoming too messy and to encourage fresh, healthy growth.

6. Vallisneria

Want a grassy, jungle-like backdrop? Vallisneria (Val) is a hardy plant that sends out runners across your tank. Before long, you’ll have a thick green forest swaying in the current.

💡 Tip: Once established, Val grows quickly. Regular trimming will keep it under control and looking neat.

7. Water Wisteria

For fast nutrient uptake and bright green color, Water Wisteria is a great low-tech option. It can be rooted or even floated, and its quick growth helps prevent algae by soaking up excess nutrients.

💡 Tip: Trim and replant cuttings to create fuller, bushier growth.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need a high-tech setup to enjoy a lush planted aquarium. By choosing the right plants, you can create a thriving underwater jungle in a simple, low-maintenance tank. Start with a few of these easy species, give them moderate light and nutrients, and watch your aquascape transform over time.
